Valentino Rossi Get Pole Position in Mugello Circuit

Valentino Rossi will make his attempt at a seventh consecutive home win in Sunday´s Gran Premio d´Italia Alice from pole position. The five-time MotoGP World Champion was in inspired form as he negotiated his favourite circuit on the calendar, smashing the existing Saturday record by eight tenths of a second with a 1´48.130 lap.

For the racer who has seemingly done everything in the premier class, pole position signified a new milestone for the Fiat Yamaha rider. His first of the season and first with Bridgestone tyres, Rossi´s most recent top spot is also his fiftieth in the World Championship and keeps alive Yamaha´s perfect pole record thus far in 2008.
Rossi recorded his fastest lap with time to spare in the dry afternoon qualifying session, with no rider able to hang with the Italian favourite. Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa came closest to dethroning the `King of Mugello´ with his final attempt, but fell just short with a time less than two-tenths of a second down on that of the current series leader.

Loris Capirossi completes the front row for the Sunday showdown, his first time on the frontline since joining Rizla Suzuki. Capirossi is the only racer on the grid besides Rossi to have won at Mugello, and will be gunning for his countryman when the lights go out.
2007 MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner made it four different factories in the top four, heading the second row for home team Ducati Marlboro and lining up alongside Shanghai and Le Mans poleman Colin Edwards. Repsol Honda´s Nicky Hayden completes the second line of attack.

Jorge Lorenzo nonetheless starts from his lowest grid position since moving up to MotoGP. In seventh place at the top of row three, the Spaniard will have to storm through the field to try and catch Fiat Yamaha teammate Rossi. Heading into the first corner, he may also bash fairings with Tech 3 Yamaha´s James Toseland and San Carlo Honda Gresini´s Shinya Nakano, who join him in the eighth and ninth grid placings, respectively.

Brivio warns rivals that Rossi run could be `typical´

Two victories from the most recent pair of races have put Valentino Rossi back on top of the MotoGP World Championship for the first time in a year and, with Jorge Lorenzo upholding his end of the bargain Fiat Yamaha now hold a comfortable lead in the team standings. `When Rossi feels good on the bike, the tyre is working good and he can ride as he wants until the end of the race, then we can say that China and Le Mans are typical races,´ stated Brivio.

`I´m very proud to achieve this in five races, as it really shows how Yamaha have been competitive every weekend. Rossi has won in Mugello on Aprilia, Honda and Yamaha machinery, and can make it three tyre manufacturers to whom he has given an Italian win should he cross the line first at the Gran Premio d´Italia Alice. To add to his perfect four-stroke record at the track with Michelin and lower cylinder category Dunlop success, the five-time MotoGP World Champion now has the chance to give Bridgestone their first Mugello victory.

`It´s important for Valentino Rossi to win in Mugello, after six years of victories and a new tyre manufacturer.

Lorenzo gets green light to race at Le Mans

Jorge Lorenzo has been given the official 'thumbs up' to participate in this weekend’s French Grand Prix, after undergoing assessment in Barcelona this afternoon by Doctor Xavier Mir. The Fiat Yamaha rider paid a visit to the Dexeus Institute where Doctor Mir assessed the injuries to both ankles, sustained in Shanghai less than two weeks ago, before taking his flight to Paris.

X-rays confirmed that the astragalus in Lorenzo's right ankle and torn lateral internal ligament in his left are both healing well. The edema and post-traumatic bruising suffered by the current second-placed rider in the MotoGP World Championship have also reduced significantly. The 21-year-old will continue to have physiotherapy on the two joints, which will remain immobilised, before he takes to the track for first free practice at Le Mans on Friday morning.

"Not enough time has passed yet for the injuries to fully heal, but Jorge's pain threshold will allow him to compete without too much risk this weekend," commented Doctor Mir.

Improvement of Yamaha-Bridgestone package Rossi´s priority

Following his hard fought third place at Estoril on Sunday, Valentino Rossi´s post-GP test focussed on the crucial development process between the Yamaha M1 and his new Bridgestone tyres.

Testing new front and rear tyres as well as some qualifiers, Rossi put in 90 laps and ended up second on the timesheet with a best effort of 1'36.707. On race tyres he also improved on his fastest lap from Sunday´s race.

`We have to work hard,´ continued the five-time former MotoGP title winner. `The competition this year is very strong, but we are going in the right direction. The Michelin qualifying tyre is fantastic and our tyre is not so bad, but not at the same level. We are trying to find some more grip, and some consistency to keep going until the end of the lap. We are improving and I am confident.´
