MotoGP podium trio speak after A-Style TT Assen

Casey Stoner – Race Winner
`We´ve known that we had the pace to do it, but it makes you even more nervous knowing that the only thing that can go wrong is you! It managed to stay dry for the race, and I´m happy with that. Valentino´s crash was unfortunate, I don't want anybody to crash so that I can win points that way, but I´ve had some bad luck too this year. The team have done a great job this weekend.´
Dani Pedrosa – Second Place
`It was important to finish in front, second is a very good result. We had struggled a little, and in the race it was impossible to follow Casey. He was so fast, so I just tried my best to push. I am happy with this result, with returning to the podium and with the championship position.´
Colin Edwards – Third Place
`What can you say? `What comes around goes around, he who laughs last´ etc, whatever you like. I thought I got a good start, but I got to the first corner and it found out that I didn't. Valentino crashed in front of me and I had to practically stop the bike. I got closer and closer to Nicky and Dani, but there was nothing that I could really do, then we had some luck at the place that got me two years ago! I´m really happy to be on the podium, especially with my wife and kids here to see it.´

Ducati confirm additional Mugello test with Gibernau

Former Ducati MotoGP rider Sete Gibernau has been lined-up for another test with the World Champions at their chosen testing venue of Mugello next week.
Having not sampled a MotoGP bike since his retirement from riding for Ducati in the premier class in October 2006, following meetings in his native Barcelona on the Catalunya GP weekend Gibernau successfully completed a three-day test last week at Mugello, where he rode the Desmosedici GP9.

Livio Suppo, Ducati MotoGP project director, said of Gibernau´s additional, forthcoming test opportunity, `He will be on track again at Mugello again from 1st-3rd July. As we said after the first test we were happy and we were thinking about doing something else, so here we are.´

When pressed on the subject of whether the 35 year-old Spaniard might be lined up for a sensational return to racing this season Suppo replied, `At the moment there is still no plan. Of course the situation is not easy, everyone knows what we are talking about, with Marco (Melandri). But at the moment I still believe Marco can do it and the next two races are at Sachsenring and Laguna where he has always done well.´
`He was struggling with the 800cc Honda last year and then at Sachsenring and Laguna he did very well, so I think we should wait and see if he can find a solution at a circuit he likes.´

Stoner proves unstoppable at Donington Park

Casey Stoner proved uncatchable for his MotoGP rivals as he cruised to a second Donington Park victory in as many years. The 2007 World Champion was the fastest off the line from pole position, taking the kind of runaway win typical of his title winning year at the bwin.com British Grand Prix.

With his second triumph of the season, Stoner moved his way up to third in the overall classification. The two riders ahead of him in the standings, Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa, were involved in an entertaining battle some seven seconds back, trading places repeatedly at the midway point of the race. Riding in his 200th Grand Prix, Fiat Yamaha rider Rossi eventually won out, continuing a seven race run of podium finishes in 2008.

Repsol Honda´s Pedrosa came in third at the scene of his 2006 victory. His consistency keeps up the pressure on series leader Rossi, who he trails by just eleven points.

Colin Edwards was the highest placing satellite rider, finishing fourth onboard the Tech 3 Yamaha M1. Whilst his was a positive result, teammate and home rider James Toseland had a miserable time of things in the race, crashing on the first corner and finishing last after picking the bike back up.

Last year´s 250cc racewinner, Andrea Dovizioso had another creditable showing on his first MotoGP appearance at Donington Park. The JiR Team Scot rookie was fearless even when surrounded by experienced campaigners, concluding the race in fifth ahead of fellow debutant and long-time rival Jorge Lorenzo.

Nicky Hayden, Chris Vermeulen, Shinya Nakano and Anthony West completed the top ten, whilst Rizla Suzuki´s stand-in rider Ben Spies earned his first MotoGP points on his maiden appearance. The American will now wait to find out if his services are required for the upcoming A-Style TT Assen, or if Loris Capirossi –injured but watching on in Donington- will be fit for a return to action in the Netherlands.

The only rider unable to finish the race was John Hopkins, the Kawasaki rider retiring with a mechanical problem.

Casey Stoner will start from pole position, after an amazing qualifying performance.

As the rain continued to fall on Donington Park, Casey Stoner performed the MotoGP equivalent of walking on water in the Saturday afternoon qualifying session. The Ducati Marlboro racer was unstoppable in an amazing hour-long demonstration of 800cc riding en route to his second consecutive pole position of the year, continually lowering his times right up to the final moment.

Stoner eventually settled on a 1´38.232 lap as his ultimate offer, some six tenths of a second ahead of nearest rival Valentino Rossi. After dominating in the dry on Friday, the reigning World Champion has proved that he is ready for any eventuality when the lights go out on Sunday. Rossi, however, is the current series leader, and a racer who has also proved his worth at Donington Park in previous years.

Rizla Suzuki racer's Chris Vermeulen makes his maiden appearance of the season on the front row at the bwin.com British Grand Prix, aiming for a repeat of his 2007 podium, his presence on the front line also marks the first time this year that Bridgestone have taken all three top spots for a MotoGP race.

Nicky Hayden continued his upturn in fortunes since receiving the pneumatic valve engine from Honda. He could only use the motor on the condition of a top four placing, and the 2006 World Champion once again upheld his part of the bargain, albeit a full second slower than Stoner.

Pedrosa, Rossi and Stoner give thoughts from the MotoGP podium

Race winner Dani Pedrosa and his fellow podium finishers all faced the cameras after the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya to give their thoughts on the Barcelona showdown.

Dani Pedrosa – Race Winner
`I don't know where the pace came from. It was a fantastic race, amazing to win. I won in 125cc and 250cc here, so now to win in MotoGP is great. The other two were pushing hard. I went to a different setting than yesterday, and it worked.´
Valentino Rossi – Second Place
`What a race! I´m very happy; I had a lot of fun with overtaking. I´m pleased with 20 points, but knew that if we were going to beat Dani then we´d have to start at the front. It was a great battle with Casey, which I enjoyed a lot.´

Casey Stoner – Third Place
`For some reason we had no rear feeling entering the corners from the first lap. I lost a lot of confidence because in these corners you need hard braking as you´re cornering. Generally I wasn't happy at all with my riding today. In the end it was just a battle with Vale at the end; he was close to me a few times, I could feel him. I have to be happy with a podium in any case.´

Valentino Rossi, The King of Mugello

Taking the lead from 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner on the fourth lap, Rossi then set about creating a gap between himself and the chasing pack. He did so with a series of increasingly faster times, and eventually crossed the line with a comfortable advantage for Mugello premier class victory number seven. His rivals must now wait another year to attempt to dethrone the `King of Mugello´.

The supporting cast to the Rossi show was headed by Ducati Marlboro racer Stoner, on the podium at Mugello for only the second time in his Grand Prix career. The result helps Stoner make up ground in the MotoGP standings, in which he maintains fourth place but narrows the gap between himself and Jorge Lorenzo.
Second in the World Championship, Dani Pedrosa completed the podium places, having got off to a fantastic start courtesy of his Repsol Honda RC212V launch control. The Spaniard will next week be chasing victory on home soil in Catalunya.

A best result of 2008 for Alex de Angelis was another reason for Italian fans to be cheerful, with the San Carlo Honda Gresini man taking fourth place. The San Marino-born racer was riding what as effectively his home race, and had shown his cards early with the fastest time in the morning warmup.
Before the halfway point there were a number of racers withdrawing from the action. First out were Marco Melandri and Randy de Puniet, both sliding off track whilst battling amongst themselves. They were followed by Kawasaki rider John Hopkins and, in a blow to his world title chances, second Fiat Yamaha rider Lorenzo.
